Explore Your Options to Avoid Triggers with Crohns

Have you noticed that certain times of year you get flare ups?  Or maybe certain foods seem to cause them, you may even find that is comes about due to your surrounding environment.  Whatever the case may be your body has a way of letting you know something isn’t right. Do you find that you are spending more time alone than you would like because your disease is taking control? So often people with Crohns feel alienated in their world, but you don’t have to. There are so many others out there just like you suffering as well.  So the question now becomes what do I do to avoid the flare ups from happening? Below are some tips that may help you avoid flare ups or at least limit the amount of flare ups you experience.

  • We understand food tolerances are different for everyone. There are certain food groups that tend to be common problems: dairy products, fatty foods, and raw fruits and veggies. While those should be avoided sandwiches with lean meat like turkey (and avocado instead of lettuce and tomato), or well-cooked foods like mashed potatoes, rice, and veggies tend to be better tolerated easier.  If you find that you are going to a chain restaurant with family or friends such as Chili’s or Applebee’s they may offer something you can eat.
  • It’s ok to try certain cuisines. You may find that some tend to be better tolerated than others. Spicy foods such as Indian or Mexican usually do not go down as well as blander meals. Japanese food like miso soup, sticky rice, or salmon can be good choices. Try to stay within your limit of tolerance as well as nutritionally to avoid a flare up.
  • If you find that you are in a hurry and don’t have time to explore menu options or you are just on the go other healthy alternatives to fast food are Chipotle or Subway. Avoid the places that sell high fatty foods as they could cause a flare up.
  • Catching up with friends and family over lunch or dinner can really be a lot of fun, you don’t have to miss out because you don’t feel well enough to eat. Some alternatives to food might be a hot tea, a glass of juice or chicken broth. The pleasure of enjoying others company can be emotionally lifting. Try carrying some granola or a bottle of Ensure or Boost with you in case you start to feel hungry.

Remember you can live a full life if you pay attention to your environment.  Ultimately feeling well is your goal so allow yourself the support of family and friends.
