  • Everything You Need to Know About Acid Reflux

Do you or someone you know have acid reflux? Are you unsure about what it is? By the time you’re done reading, you’ll know everything you need to know about Acid Reflux.

    What is acid reflux?

Acid reflux is a condition in which the acid liquid content from the stomach backs up into the esophagus. This causes a burning feeling in your chest and throat. This is what most people call heartburn. Keep in mind that occasional heartburn is common, but it does not mean one has acid reflux.

    Why does it happen?

Acid reflux happens when the muscle in the lower  esophagus, the esophageal (LES), does not function as it should. This muscle is responsible for opening an closing when food passes through. When the LES does not close completely, acid from the stomach can move into the esophagus.

Other factors that can contribute to acid reflux are alcohol use, obesity, pregnancy, and smoking.

    Who can have it?

Anyone, at any age, can have acid reflux.

    What are the symptoms?

The acid can inflame and harm the inner walls of the esophagus.

Common signs of acid reflux include:

    • Difficulty swallowing
    • Coughing
    • Wheezing
    • Asthma
    • Chronic sore throat

    • Heartburn
    • Bloating
    • Bloody or black stools
    • Bloody vomiting
    • Burping
    • Hiccups
    • Nausea
    • Weight loss

    How can I control it?

    • Avoid foods and drinks that make your symptoms worse
    • Quit smoking
    • Avoid lying on your back after eating
    • Eat small, more frequent meals
    • Elevate the head of your bed
    • Avoid foods like:
