Ulcer and Ulcer
Relief:
What is an Ulcer?
A Peptic Ulcer is erosion found in the gastrointestinal
tract. This is usually found in the small intestine. A
Gastric Ulcer is located in the stomach. Ulcers usually heal
on their own but they can lead to serious health problems.
It's important not to ignore the warning signs.
Causes
Your digestive tract has a protective coating to protect the
lining of your stomach and intestine from being damaged by
the natural acids your body produces. If there is an
imbalance in the digestive fluids it can cause the coating
to break down. If the coating is broken down the acids begin
to touch these areas and damage like inflammation or ulcers
can occur.
Ulcers are usually cause by a bacterial infection. Bacteria
called the Helicobacter pylori live in your gastrointestinal
tract and can infect the stomach.
Common triggers of an ulcer are:
-painkillers: any anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin,
alieve, Ibuprofen, Motrin< Advil ect.)
-drinking alcohol or smoking/chewing tobacco
-Excessive acid productions from a tumor in your pancreas
-radiation treatments
-family history of ulcers
Symptoms
An Ulcer doesn't always show symptoms. Some common symptoms
of an ulcer is:
-abdominal pain
-feeling of fullness
-bloating
-heartburn
-chest pain
-nausea or vomiting
If you don't treat your ulcer, you symptoms can worsen and
turn into bleeding, perforation or even gastric outlet
obstruction. Perforation is when the acids make a hole
through the wall of you stomach. Gastric outlet obstruction
is when the swelling or scarring can block that passage way
from the stomach to the small intestine.
Diagnosis
Make an appointment with you physician so he can evaluate
your symptoms. He/She may be able to make a ulcer diagnosis by
just hearing your symptoms. He/She can prescribe you
acid-blocking medication to see if your symptoms improve.
When your symptoms are more severe he can perform a few
different test to evaluate your problem.
Upper endoscopy: This is where a thin lighted tube
will be inserted through your mouth and into your
gastrointestinal tract to see you stomach and small
intestine to look for any abnormalities. He can also take a
biopsy to test any tissue to determine the extent of the
problem.
Upper G: Is a special type of X-ray. You will
drink a substance called barium. Barium helps your physician
to see certain parts of you gastrointestinal tract when he
takes a series of x-rays.
Stool samples: Stool samples can be taken to test
if there is any blood in your stool.
Treatment
An Ulcer can sometimes heal on it own. When you experience
symptoms make sure to treat the problem quickly so your
symptoms do not worsen.
There are several ways an ulcer can be treated. A change in
diet, prescription medication, natural supplements and
surgery are all ways to treat an ulcer.
Dieting:
A diet can make a big difference in the symptoms you
experience with an ulcer. Sticking to a bland diet will help
the healing process move along much easier.. Eliminating
Spicy or acidic foods, fatty fried or greasy foods,
caffeinated drinks, citrus fruits and juices (grapefruit,
orange, pineapple, tomato), coffee, and tea. Eat small,
frequent portions of food and snacks. Stop using tobacco in
all forms and don't use alcohol.
Prescription Medications:
Prescription medication is another method used to reduce
acid levels in the body and allows the ulcer to heal. Some
prescription mediations that your physician will recommend
include: Prilosec, Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix and Nexium.
Ani-biotics is another prescription medications used to
heal the bacterial infection. Your doctors will use this in
conjunction with the Anti-Acids listed above.

Natural supplements are a great way of not just masking the
symptoms, but going at the root of the problem.
